- Rivers are home to abundant fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals.
- Fish are the most common aquatic species living in rivers. There are over 18,000 species of freshwater fish worldwide.
- Some river mammals include: otters, beavers and water voles.
- There are many different species of amphibian that live in the river; newts, frogs, toads, and salamanders.
- Birds typically live near rivers because of the vast amount of fish, amphibian and invertebrates that can be found in a river; dippers, herons, kingfishers
