Located in the lowland tropical rainforest preserve on the Caribbean coast, the Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica has been rescuing injured, orphaned and abandoned sloths since 1992. The first-ever sloth-only rescue facility in the world is a safe haven for sloths that have fallen victim to perils relating to human activity: rainforest destruction, the exotic pet trade, roads and electrical lines fragmenting the sloths’ habitat and exploitation for tourism. Family-owned and funded by the generosity of donors from all over the world, the Sloth Sanctuary offers tours six days a week to promote understanding and respect of these reclusive creatures.
