Blue Morpho Butterfly

The Blue Morpho Butterfly is not Technically Blue

The Blue Morpho Butterfly is one of the largest butteflies in the world. Its vivid, iridescent blue coloring is created by the microscopic scales (not blue pigmentation) on the upper wings, which reflect light, making it easier to spot in the rainforest. The underside of the morpho’s wings, on the other hand, is a dull brown color with many eyespots.
